Design principles
Keep presentation consistent, composition explicit and native interactions intact.
Shared visual language
Use the theme's semantic colors, surfaces and spacing rather than choosing new values for each component. Variants describe presentation; changing a variant should not replace a component's activation or selection behavior.
Compose, do not simulate
Use a component's public parts to arrange its content. Keep controls, labels and overlays connected through their root. A styled div is not a replacement for a native button, menu item or dialog.
Preserve the interaction
Forward supplied props and refs when using the native render contract. Keep event handlers, state attributes and accessible relationships. Ordinary controls retain Base UI contracts; date, time and color parts retain their React Aria context.
Verify the application
Check labels, keyboard navigation, focus restoration and contrast in the interface you ship. Test both themes and reduced motion. A component's source example does not prove your customized composition.
